Voices of the Centenaries at Ballintubber Abbey
An audience of almost two hundred people gathered at Ballintubber Abbey on Sunday evening, 9th November 2025, for a moving and memorable concert entitled Voices of the Centenaries, presented by acclaimed vocal ensemble Resurgam.
This special event formed part of Mayo County Council’s Commemorative Programme 2025, marking significant historical centenaries through music of exceptional artistic and cultural importance.
Performers on the evening included Resurgam singers Aisling Kenny (soprano), Steve Wallace (alto), Rory Lynch (tenor), and William Gaunt (bass), joined by the Galway-based chamber choir Collegium. Musical accompaniment was provided by Malcolm Proud (organ) and Siobhán Armstrong (harp). The concert was led by Mark Duley, Artistic Director of Resurgam.
The ancient architecture of Ballintubber Abbey, with its renowned acoustics, provided a powerful and atmospheric setting for the live performance. Carefully designed special lighting further enhanced the sense of occasion, creating an immersive and reflective experience for the audience.
Founded in 2003 by Mark Duley, Resurgam is one of Ireland’s most highly regarded vocal ensembles, specialising in music of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. As Ireland’s premier project-based professional choir, Resurgam brings together singers who also enjoy parallel careers as international soloists. The ensemble is particularly committed to delivering the highest standards of music-making in the West of Ireland, performing in places and regions where professional vocal concerts are rarely heard.
This event was funded by the Commemorations Unit of the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport. Mayo County Council extends its sincere thanks to Ballintubber Abbey Trust, Resurgam, all participating performers, and everyone who attended this special commemorative evening.
