Restorer of the Nave: The Legacy of Very Reverend Thomas Egan (1935–1979)
Ordained on 23rd June 1935, Very Reverend Thomas Egan served as Parish Priest of Ballintubber from 1959 until 1974. His time in Ballintubber marked a transformative chapter in the Abbey’s long and storied history.
Fr. Egan is best remembered for leading the restoration of the Nave of Ballintubber Abbey, which had remained roofless for centuries following the devastations of penal times. His dedication culminated in 1967, when the restoration was completed, just in time for the 750th anniversary of the Abbey’s founding in 1966.
These celebrations became a landmark occasion. The commemorative Mass drew together the Canons Regular and Augustinian Fathers, the O’Conor Don (a direct descendant of the Abbey’s royal founder, Cathal Crobhdearg Ua Conchobair), and a gathering of clergy with ties to Ballintubber.
Among the distinguished guests were President Éamon de Valera, Taoiseach Seán Lemass, senior members of the Irish Government, and bishops from across Ireland. It was President de Valera who famously quoted Douglas Hyde’s prophecy:
“When Ballintubber is roofed, Ireland will be set free again.“
Fr. Egan’s leadership was pivotal. The restoration, costing £32,200, was not only a structural achievement but a powerful symbol of faith and perseverance. He believed the timing was providential, noting that completing the work in time for the 750th anniversary seemed to align with a deeper spiritual plan.
Beyond the physical restoration, Fr. Egan recognised the Abbey’s emerging role as a site of ecumenical welcome. He spoke of the many non-Catholic pilgrims drawn to Ballintubber, remarking that it was becoming a bridge between Christian traditions.
Fr. Thomas Egan passed away on 17th October 1979. He is buried in the cemetery at Ballintubber Abbey, close to the sacred space he helped renew. His legacy lives on in the restored nave, still in daily use, and in the enduring spirit of Ballintubber Abbey: a place that refused to die, thanks in no small part to his vision and leadership.
