Ireland West Camino: A Pilgrimage Reborn

Pre-Premiere Screenings | January 22–26

Ballintubber Abbey is proud to be one of the host venues for a special series of pre-premiere screenings of Ireland West Camino: A Pilgrimage Reborn, a feature-length documentary celebrating the revival of one of Ireland’s most ancient pilgrimage routes.

This powerful new film tells the story of the Tóchar Phádraig—the Bronze Age pilgrimage path traditionally followed by St Patrick in the 5th century, stretching from Rathcroghan to Croagh Patrick. In the summer of 2024, this historic route was re-walked in its entirety by 20 pilgrims over eight days, culminating at Croagh Patrick on Garland Sunday, alongside thousands of pilgrims from around the world.

Filmed across the landscapes of Roscommon, Sligo, and Mayo, the documentary follows the pilgrims’ physical and spiritual journey while exploring the deep cultural, archaeological, and natural heritage of the west of Ireland. Through encounters with sacred sites, local traditions, music, mythology, and community, the film reflects on pilgrimage as a timeless act of renewal, hope, and reconnection.

The project is a collaborative Irish-American initiative led by Ballintubber Abbey, The Tochar Valley Rural Community Network, Inchanted Journeys, and Breiter Films, and represents a major step in the ongoing revitalisation of the Ireland West Camino.
