The Underground Crib: A Place of Intimacy and Reflection

Over two thousand years ago, tradition holds that our Lord was born in a humble cave. Here at the Abbey, nestled beneath the tranquil hillside, a permanent cave-crib stands as a testament to that sacred moment.

The Crib is a place of quiet contemplation and is open for visitors year-round, but there’s something truly special about experiencing it during the Christmas season. Inside the cave, you’ll find a poignant inscription on a rock that reads, “Were Christ to be born in a thousand stables, it would be of no avail were He not born in our hearts.”

This unique Crib is an integral part of our Rosary Way, a symbol of enduring faith, and a reminder of the profound message it carries. It was lovingly constructed in 1987 by the dedicated local FAS workers, who poured their craftsmanship into this sacred space.

Throughout the year, the Crib remains open, inviting all to reflect upon the timeless wisdom captured by Mister Eckhart: “Were Christ to be born in a thousand stables, it would be of no avail were He not born in our hearts.”

Visit the Underground Crib and let its enduring message touch your heart, reminding us that true meaning is found not only in external symbols but in the depths of our own souls.
