Over the years we have offered a one day retreat experience to young people who are preparing to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. (in Ireland the age for receiving confirmation is 12 years approx)
Fr Frank Fahey initiated these programmes in these early years in Ballintubber and over time the numbers of primary schools wishing to send their pupils have increased dramatically. In 1996 13 schools participated in the confirmation retreat while in 2004 this number has increased to 89 schools.

Pupils, Teachers and priests (alike) continue to enjoy the retreat experience and are very supportive of this special ministry in Ballintubber Abbey

While the Confirmation Retreat is devised to be 'in line' with the age and needs of the children, we try also to make the day special for the children as it is their first experience of retreats.

Storytelling is an important aspect of the Confirmation retreat programme.
The inspiring Faith Filled story of Ballintubber Abbey is used to great effect in exploring the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit.

The children hear of Sheridan, the man in Ballintubber who gave shelter to the young King Cathal O'Connor when he was in flight from his evil step-mother. Such was the kindness shown to him by Sheridan that he built the royal Abbey that stands proudly in Ballintubber today.

The menacing tree of Seán na Sagart in the graveyard acts as a reminder of the need for trustfulness in our lives. The children listen wide-eyed and awe-struck as they hear of Seán Maloney, the local priest hunter who, on one occasion, went to his unsuspecting sister, pretending he was sick and dying. She believed him and called for the priest so that Seán might be absolved of his terrible sins. Just as the priest was about to give him absolution, Seán took a dagger from under the bed clothes and killed the old priest before once again taking flight - we needn't to point out that Seán na Sagart wasn't a man to be trusted !!

As the day evolves with story - telling, art-work, quiet - time, group work and prayer the children are encouraged to reflect on how they can exemplify love, joy, peace, patience and all the Fruits of the Holy Spirit in their own lives whether at home, in their schools or neighbourhood.

In our par-liturgy at the close of the retreat day all children have an opportunity to participate whether in retelling a story, offering the work of their hands by presenting their artwork and of their hearts by sharing the prayer they composed. In this way all experiences, talents and fruits of the day are shared.
